Return to Eden: Reclaim the Streets

Return to Eden investigates methods that can be implemented to enhance permeability within an urban environment through re-wilding. By reclaiming public territories and disrupting the current street topologies and cultivation productive green enclosures on paving and façade surfaces in the London Borough of Newham.

The project looks at ways of controlling of water within the urban landscape through Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) by slowing the discharge and utilising water on site. The implementation of various SuDS strategies such as permeable paving and bio-swales provide safety to the public through the delineation of boundaries and the reduction of motor vehicle speed.

Through materiality the project looks at the de-carbonisation of construction materials and reuse and recycling of finite resources in Quarry sites. At the same time allowing plants to flourish within the building’s façade, reclaiming their space within the city streets, as well as creating soft landscapes.
